ethel

like i have to keep running into this conversation
is this my hair? is this your shoe?
where do we live
when we sail around the kitchen
looking for thing
that thing
dripping sink
taped to the sill's windows
how badly can we want to want each other
to want to live
do we put it in bowls and on patchy lists?
we have a mania for plants in the room
& laugh until noon
& we don't choose it
we live with it
i coud have wrapped the architect of this place
in watermelon rinds
or whatever warm looks like
we have to get a truck for spring
when i pull the abandoned out of the lot
and we spread hither
we have to extend more
movement
more than habitation
unless, of course, we can do that as well
whip me into shape
with our eager language at brunch
we juice with the juicer
we toast with the toaster
and the fruit is back in the kitchen
it looks real fine
and what else is fine
we write on the walls
i wonder
what do we contain?
and what are we containing?
i started making breakfast
now to share
and some sisters came over here
to crawl over here
