adventure playground in gladsaxe kommun, denmark the structures in the foreground are built by and for children and act as a direct counterpoint to the institutionalization of adult life as exampled by the homogenous units which function as apartments for human housing in the background
i am interested in the idea that children, when given the freedom to do so, will exercise their agency to create spaces for play that are specific to their needs. those needs (for exploration, testing and creating boundaries, trying out roles, and more.) what i am interested in especially is what can happen when adults give children the space and respect to fundamentally choose how they play, what they play, and where they play it. perhaps this could positively inflect their growth and development toward being both more self and community oriented, aware of their own capacity for making things happen, and conscious of independence to a degree that affords them the status of individual agents from birth to death.
if anyone who reads this has similar interests, please let me know, as i am hoping to expand my understanding of childhood and children's position in the world. i want to enter into conversation and study concerning radical pedagogy for younger children (ages 3-10 approx.) and also wish to expand my understanding of spatial design for/by/with children. i am familiar with maria montessori's philosophy, and hope to find more alternative educational philosophies that reflect some of the ideas i have outlined above.
