VIDEO 3 from Teal Gardner on Vimeo.
Sorry about the crappy sound!! Here's some background/directions:
Thank you for choosing to watch Video 3! Unlike most other videos you’ve watched today, Video 3 will ask you to be an active participant, on the spot. Quite literally, it will ask you complete it by speaking directly to you, by asking you what you think, giving you a space to write down, draw, doodle, sketch, scribble, or puncture your response (methods will vary!) Video 3 will not ask you to buy anything. Paper and pen (writing apparatus) are included with the DVD, but by no means should limit your response: if you feel moved to sculpt from bread dough a response whilst watching, do so! By following the directions voiced therein, you will become a cyborg-creature, interacting technologically through a mechanical process with a lifeless (though lively) machine. The video is deliberately slow moving, with plenty of time allotted within each section for you to explore the images presented by the screen. It is timed in such a way that you will probably become bored if you haven’t been following the directions, and even if you have, you might still become bored. You may begin to ask yourself “What the hell is going on? Where’s the action? I am bored! Why am I doing this?” This kind of questioning, bordering on rage, is good, and is encouraged throughout, as long as it be channelled into. Do keep in mind that the few questions that are asked by the voiceover are not necessarily the only questions that could be asked. Perhaps as you become more comfortable with the activity, you’ll find yourself carried off by your imagination, creating a fiction of your own, drawn from the sequence of images and half-tales presented in Video 3. I sincerely hope that you will give Video 3 your honest attention, and that you will enjoy the experience forthcoming.
DIRECTIONS for DVD users:
Remove DVD from case and place in DVD drive attached to Computer or Television screen or Digital Projector. You have just inserted a foreign object into something that you probably own. Be aware that you are now in the company of strangers.
Remove writing apparatus (included in DVD case) and write your first name at the top of the page. Good! This paper is your work now. It is your side of the equation, it is your screen!
Once you’ve made yourself comfortable, (a beverage, perhaps?) begin!
DIRECTIONS for INTERNET viewing:
(read DVD directions and those below)
If watching Video 3 in public, consider asking someone nearby for a pen. Prepare writing apparatus and press “play.” Headphones are not necessary. Visible, physical response is strongly encouraged.
AFTERWARD:
Consider what you have produced. Consider why Video 3 asks for response, and why anyone would make a video that requires so much of the viewer, and provides so little in the way of entertainment. If you have further interest in Video 3, or questions relating, please read the essay, entitled ‘Video 3: A System of Layers.’ For DVD users, the essay is included with the DVD packaging. For internet viewers, please visit GOODYMOB.BLOGSPOT.COM for the full text.
Please consider sharing Video 3 with others, the DVD can be copied at will, and the URL distributed freely. If you’re going to share, please point others toward these directions.
